Sooner or later, every asphalt pavement will need some type of asphalt repair. A properly engineered, well-built pavement may not need anything more than sealcoating and other routine maintenance for five years or more. Once it does start to develop cracks or other surface breaks, however, it is imperative that they be repaired quickly. Minor damage will not stay minor for long. As the damage grows, it becomes more difficult and costlier to repair it. If your asphalt pavement needs more than a few simple crack repairs, you may need one or more of the following: a surface patch, a partial-depth patch, a full-depth patch, or an asphalt overlay.
What Is a Surface Patch?
A surface patch is an economical way to repair damage that only extends an inch or two into the pavement, and it can also be an excellent option to correct certain drainage issues. Because the patch does not go deep into the structure of the pavement, surface patches are sometimes called skin patches. Depending on the issue, a surface patch may provide only a temporary solution that will need to be repeated in less than two years. Furthermore, if a surface patch is applied over some cracks, the pattern of the cracks can begin to manifest in the patch in a relatively short period of time.
A partial-depth patch can also be called a peel-and-pave repair. The technique involves the removal of as many layers of asphalt paving as necessary to take out the damage. This could be all layers of asphalt above the foundation, or it could be only the top layers. The asphalt is then replaced and compacted. Partial-depth patches typically last longer than surface patches, and they can be used to correct a greater variety of problems, including issues related to the volume or weight of the traffic load.

What Is a Full-Depth Patch?
Full-depth patches are similar to partial-depth patches, but a full-depth patch involves the removal of all layers of the existing pavement to expose the base, which may also be removed partially or completely. This allows the contractor to repair or strengthen the base. By addressing the entire structure of the pavement, a full-depth patch frequently provides a pavement that is stronger than it was when it was first constructed. In the paving industry, full-depth patches are normally considered permanent repairs, so they should be maintained just like the rest of the asphalt pavement.
